Nonna Knows Best - Heavy Legs

Heavy legs and swollen ankles are not only uncomfortable but also exhausting to have to deal with.

Whether your legs are heavy from the summer heat, or from running around all day, we have a few tips to help you take the pressure off.

However, we want to be clear that if this problem persists, you should contact your doctor immediately, as there could be a more serious underlying problem.

Watermelon

In case you weren’t sure how we felt about watermelon, here we are mentioning it again! It truly is a fantastic fruit in so many ways. In this particular context, it acts as a great diuretic, riding you of any excess water that you may be holding on to, which can cause you pain.

From personal experience, watermelon juice was fantastic in the aftermath of labor. Having been on an IV for multiple days, my legs were swollen and heavy. Within 48 hours of starting to drink watermelon juice, my legs were back to normal.

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing helps to promote circulation and lymphatic drainage. Start from your feet and work your way up. Do this for approximately 10 minutes before taking a cool shower.

Dry brushing is also great for exfoliating skin, so you get two great benefits from this!

Epsom Salt Bath

Two cups in a warm bath will help to relieve muscle soreness, pain and swelling. Soak for at least 20 minutes.

Elevation

Elevating your legs onto a cushion or up against a wall, will also help to promote circulation and relieve some discomfort. If using the wall, try to get into an L shape and stay there for a few minutes.

**DISCLAIMER** We are not physicians, and speak only from our own experiences. When in doubt always consult your regular health practitioner, to ensure that there are no underlying causes to your discomfort.
